Studio Massa’s public official Ongezellig spoiler document[1], or the Ongezellig lore document, is an official lore document created by Studio Massa about various things relating to Ongezellig like the inspirations for characters, non-canon stuff, and why Ongezellig was cancelled. This page will parse everything in that document, so you don't have to get datamined by Google. Note that this page is based on the English fan translation of the document.

Maya

Maya Schoppenboer was born on September 21st of an unknown year[2] in North Brabant to her parents Ravi Schoppenboer and Soei Schoppenboer as their only biological child. Ravi is half North Brabantian and half Hindustani-Surinamese (we call this half Dutch half Indian) and Soei is half Moluccan[3] half Chinese-Indonesian (we call this half Chinese half Indonesian)[4]. Maya is a sad, ongezellig teenager because of her ADD making socializing hard, losing her cat Noga, Coco and Mymy being better than her and thinking her parents adopted them to compensate for her, and the fact few people around share her interests.

Inspiration for Maya

Maya's design was inspired by Curry from Mayo en Curry, an earlier comic series made by Massa when he was a teenager. Maya's behavior was inspired by Massa's own experiences as a teenager. The Schoppenboer (pronounced skho-pen-boor) name comes from the nickname for Magere Hein, the personification of death, in Afrikaans literature[5]. It means "Jack of Spades", the card.

Misconceptions about Maya

  • Maya is based on Tomoko from Watamote

Maya is mostly based on Massa's experiences.

  • Maya is Indonesian

This was hinted at by the map of Indonesia in Vera's classroom, but Massa thought it would be more interesting to make Maya multiracial to compound on her condition.

  • Maya has autism

Her behavior could hint towards autism and or ADHD, but it is confirmed that she has ADHD.

  • It's called ADHD, now, you bigxt!

Massa called it ADD for the autism denial disorder joke.

Coco

Coco Potgieter was born on December 16 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Her father and pregnant mother were killed in an accident involving a lightning strike. The deaths of her parents and unborn sibling are the cause of her affection towards her adoptive family, her repressed anger, and her chronic uneasiness about life. Coco plays rugby and is the drummer for the eurobeat folk band called Running in the '60s whose other mates include Cleo on guitar, Zoey, on bass guitar, and Yfke on the synthesizer.

Inspiration for Coco

Coco is inspired by Mayo from Mayo en Curry. She is the antithesis of Maya. Massa was obsessed with the Dutch history of South Africa. He met someone with the Potgieter surname and thought it sounded nice. The name means "potter" or "pot smith".

Misconceptions about Coco

  • Coco's parents were murdered

If you believed this, you wanted it to be true, you hecking racist!!

  • Coco is stupid

She's just bad with technology and skipped puberty (has an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex).

  • Coco swears with kitty/puss, how cute

"Poes" in Afrikaans is more similar to the obscenity meaning vagina rather than "cat" like in Dutch.

Mymy

Mymy was born Meiko Tachibana on March 3 in Nagasaki, Japan. She ran away from Japan because she just liked the Netherlands more. Her older biological sister is named Eiko and is actively looking for Mymy. Mymy plays korfball and the accordion, is in love with Kapitein Koek but can't say no to Meneer de Uil[6] (because Mymy's a scaly faggot).

Inspiration for Mymy

Mymy is a character made to pull in fans of Massa's Stille Willem series on der 'tube (history buffs, I presume). Her behavior mimics adolescent exaggerated identity posing. Her name comes from the South African version of Kleine Mie from the Moemins[7]. Her clothes are colored like the Dutch flag.

Misconceptions about Mymy

Nuh uh, chud, that would mean collaborating with the enemy of the Nederlandish Volk.

  • Mymy is racist

Her problem with Belgium is the country rather than the people. She calls Germans Krauts when they steal her bike and liked the Efteling Carnaval Festival ride before its renovation.

  • Mymy wears the colors of the Prinsenvlag

Her bow is red therefore her orange hair doesn't count.

  • Mymy changed her appearance to look more Dutch

Nuh uh, chud, Mymy does not have internalized racial inferiority even though she hates Japan, she just dyed her hair orange to hide from Eiko, not to appear ginger.

  • Mymy and Kiki are a couple

They aren't.

  • Everyone has a four-letter name except Mymy's birth name

Yes, that's why she hates her parents changed it.

Vera

Vera wanted to become a musician but somehow wound up becoming a bitter old teacher.

Inspiration for Vera

Vera is based on an old character from a school assignment Massa did. Her hairstyle is based on April May from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Epke and Anke

Epke and Anke are Maya's imaginary friends who are based on the few people she ever connected with. Epke's backstory is detailed in Maya's Conversatie while Anke's backstory will never be known as the sequel to Maya's Conversatie never happened.

Classmates

The background characters of various ethnicities.

  • Kiki: Future Somali pirate
  • Axel: Pompous
  • Roos: Likes Franco-Belgian comics
  • Adam: Massa did not know what Adam was
  • Goof: Only listens to nü-metal
  • Yfke: Snoop Dogg apprentice
  • Stan: Interested in the Incas probably
  • Wiel: He's a belligerent greaser
  • Trijn/Tryn: She might vote her rights away
  • Rens: He's an Eftfluencer
  • Cleo: The only goth in the Leeward Isles
  • Bert: Economics & Society[8] hardliner
  • Ilse: Not Anne Frank (lie)
  • Henk: In love with Caroline van der Plas, a Dutch politician and journalist who founded the Farmer-Citizen Movement
  • Cato: The least arrogant AFC Ajax fan
  • Koos: Says yes to ecstasy.
  • Zoey: Not shy, just introverted
  • Sjef: Limbo representative (this means he's a party boy)

Wait, Trijn doesn't have a four-letter name

The Dutch "IJ" digraph is sometimes treated as a single letter. The more you know.

Errors & non-canon stuff

These are various errors Massa found in the Deels of the Pilot, discussion on the comics, episode ideas, and other stuff. The big question is who cares?

  • The first three Deels are aesthetically worse than the later ones.
  • In Deel 1, there is a curtain in Maya's room that connects to Mymy's room.
  • In Deel 1, in the photographs, it looks like Mymy changed instantly.
  • Maya's hair is naturally dark brown but appears black because she doesn't use shampoo. This is represented in the younger photos of Maya.
  • In Deel 3, Mymy's shirt is long-sleeved during the Google translate scene.
  • Massa thinks the ending of Deel 3 is too sentimental.
  • Maya's Sweet 16 was more of an experiment in drama rather than canon Ongezellig lore.
  • Maya's Conversatie was more of an experiment in comic outsourcing rather than canon Ongezellig lore
  • Many of Massa's Illustraties through 2022 are based on supporter ideas and not all are canon.

Ideas for other episodes

Coco ends bullying

Coco discovers that Maya is being bullied, whereupon Coco stalks and gaslights the bully until he finally goes insane.

Mymy conquers Belgium

Maya becomes a band member

Coco gives Maya a spot in her band as a triangle player to give her the idea of a group of friends, but discovers that this is not how it works.

Class Representative Elections

Mymy tries to become class representative at the expense of Kiki's Pirate Party.

Maya's Cat

End

Massa leaves it open.

Production Questions

Who was the target audience of Ongezellig?

Mostly Massa himself, disappointed in the Dutch offerings on YouTube.

What software was Ongezellig made with?

TVPaint 11, Vegas Pro, and FL Studio.

How many people worked on Ongezellig?

Deels 1 and 2 were made by Massa himself. He hired workers and interns for Deels 3 through 6. In the end, Massa, 4 voice actresses, 4 freelancers, and 4 interns worked on Ongezellig.

Why is Ongezellig so Dutch?

Because Massa is Dutch.

What is the official (insert foreign language) translation of Ongezellig?

None because Ongezellig is untranslatable.

Why is there no official dubbing?

The Netherlands only has dubbing for children's shows.

Can I dub Ongezellig myself?

Massa says amateurish dubbing is never done by people who understand Dutch. He expects mistakes due to mistranslations and misinterpretations of Dutch idioms and references. He tolerates dubbing, but none are officially recognized

Why is there no merchandise?

Massa says Ongezellig stands on its own and doesn't need to be exploited with soulless consumer junk, except for Mymy Zedong because he saw the fun in that. Only when profits go to charity can he rationalize Ongezellig merch (so never).

Why is there merchandise from other projects?

“Kokosnoten zijn geen specerijen” has no soul anyway and the Dutch History IJsberg poster has educational value.

Why not Patreon?

Patreon does not have iDEAL (online payment system directly connected to bank accounts in the Netherlands) and foreigners could find Petje.af easily. He only got one email from a foreigner asking for a Patreon.

Why is there no (insert social media platform) for Ongezellig/Studio Massa?

Social media has been disastrous to the human race. He has email and Petje.

You are really bad at marketing.

Massa has that Culture & Society[9] mindset. If he did Economics & Society, then we'd have a garbage animation with good marketing, according to him.

Future Questions

Massa thought he was clear in update 130, but apparently not, so he has to be clearer to eliminate all hope.

Is Ongezellig discontinued?

Ongezellig is discontinued, stopped, cancelled, never gonna start again, IT IS OVER.

Why was Ongezellig stopped?

  1. Burnout due to too much responsibilites
  2. Exhaustion after working on Ongezellig for 7 years
  3. Limited chance of a successful pitch
  4. Not convinced that the support amount could be maintained
  5. Enough support, affinity and enjoyment of history content and its audience

Why more affinity for history content audiences?

Massa is an adult Dutchman who makes videos on Dutch subjects and has gained an audience of older Dutchmen due to his history videos, while Ongezellig attracts a younger audience from all over the world.

(skipping SNCA)

What is the future of Studio Massa?

More hobby projects on Dutch history with no ambition to go full-time on YouTube. No Zellig.

Notes

  1. Google Doc
  2. The ages of the Schoppenboer sisters (and by extension the other students) are canonically undefined, however most believe that they are 16-17 year old high school students given their retarded dispositions and the namesake of Maya's Sweet 16.
  3. From the Maluku Islands, also known as the Spice Islands, which are located in the eastern part of Indonesia.
  4. I'm guessing that Ravi was born in North Brabant to a North Brabantian Dutch parent and a Hindu Indian parent from Suriname, and Soei was born in Molucca to a Chinese parent and an Indonesian parent.
  5. Specifically Skoppensboer by Eugène Marais, a South African poet. In the story, the jack of spades (what skoppensboer/schoppenboer translate to) card is equated to Death as he always wins in the end.
  6. Kapitein Koek is the mascot and name of a discontinued Dutch breakfast cake product. Meneer de Uil is a character from the Dutch tv show De Fabeltjeskrant.
  7. the Moomins
  8. Dutch secondary education course package focusing on economics, business, and math.
  9. Dutch secondary education course package focusing on culture and forms of art.
