Archive of Our Own, abbreviated to AO3, is a website that hosts fan made writings of tens of thousands of fandoms that is a part of the Organization for Transformative Works. It positions itself as a non-profit, non-commercial archive of fanworks created by fans and for fans.
Regarding fanworks with the Ongezellig (cartoon) tag, the quality of fan fiction ranges from gemerald to singularity in terms of the quality of the subject matter and the actual writing quality. Most of the normal writings are iron, dust at worst and ruby at best. A lot of the Ongezellig fanfics feature yuricoal, some of which are about (technically) incestuous relationships between the Schoppenboer sisters, and a few stories are just 'p in written form. If you've never seen AO3, the ship tags look like this: Character1/Character2, F(emale)/M(ale).
Selected Zellig Stories
Here will be a few stories I've selected and me giving the most brief review of each of them. I haven't fully read some of them, but I'll give my review anyway. It has also been a long time since I've read or reread any of them.
The Search for Maya (3SpringFlowers)
Written by 3SpringFlowers, The Search for Maya is the longest Ongezellig fanfic on AO3. I stopped reading at chapter 11 I think, but I do remember that the writing is not subtle in the slightest.
Comfortably Uncomfortable (BrokenArrow404)
This is the second longest Ongezellig fanfic, and I actually read through all of it after taking a break in the middle of it after brimstone overload. It is an incest fanfic about Maya and Coco. In this story, Maya catches feelings for Coco for some reason, and Coco cuts herself but not because she's a MayaGOD, but because she gets uncontrollably stressed about losing Maya or her adoptive family like how she lost her biological family. Many scenes happen like this: >I'm Maya, and my feelings for my sister are SO incomprehensible, yet so good! Oh my God, why am I feeling this way, I shouldn't feel this way, but the feeling is sooo good! I'll just rest into Coco's loving arms!! And then they start kissing each other on the lips.
So, the premise is what if Maya wanted Coco to colonize her spice islands.
At the end, Coco and Maya call each other "honey" and cuddle on the couch, we are told that they have somehow kept this a secret for months, and then Coco leaves on the train for university or something.
Mymy is busy doing terrorism in Belgium and getting herself into dangerous situations with her antics. She got herself and her sisters in a situation where they get shot at by a dude with a shotgun over some 4cuck SNCA, probably. Mymy gets hit with some pellets, but she only gets a minor injury. Mymy does catch Maya and Coco doing stuff together, but she does not care enough to ask any further questions.
Disregarding the premise, the story is too repetitive in terms of scenes delivering the same or very similar emotional beats, if I remember correctly.
A Faded Tulip (pnegpng)
This is the third longest fanfic, which I haven't finished and haven't gotten far enough to really have an opinion on it, and I don't like joyous fanfics, I only like Maya depresseralds. Anyway, other people think this is a good fanfic (one of the only good fanfics, even).
The Downward Spiral of Maya Schoppenboer: a Two-Faced Charade (DebonairDeath)
In this story, Maya is an autist with a voice in her head. The events of Maya's Conversatie take place but twice, and Maya gets Epke's Instagram on the second bus trip. Maya gets a crush on Epke and becomes an obsessed yandere for him. She sees Anke with Epke on Instagram or whatever and becomes jealous. Blah blah blah, Maya lures Anke to the garden shed which the school has for some reason and kills her, so she gaslights Epke into thinking Anke left him, but Epke finds out eventually because Maya's an idiot and said something revealing, so she slams his head into the wall with the strength of the demon possessing her, knocking him out. She drags him to the garden shed, he tries to escape, so the demon takes hold again and Maya kills him by lifting him up by his neck with one hand and breaking it. Maya kills herself right after. It is revealed in the epilogue that this was a story for a school project that Maya wrote and nothing happened. Or did it?
I don't know why I went out of my way to write a plot summary for this, but I liked this fanfic. I think the demon voice is entertaining. Yeah, that's all I have for a review of this one, I don't remember crap.
Vera Persijn Will Have Her Revenge On Amsterdam-East (rlissious_deliberation)
This is the manuscript for Goontaneous' Zarty-saving gem of a fanfic. It starts with Vera talking about SNCA with her colleague, probably about the hentai thing at some point. Later, Rens goes to Vera's apartment after talking with Yfke, Sjef and Koos to talk about history, the Efteling, and other stuff that I don't remember. Rens accuses Vera of being a diddyblud for that hentai incident that happened several years ago, and Vera punches him in the face, breaking his glasses and cutting his face. Rens does an anime laugh like he's Light Yagami because he's got something on Vera or something I don't remember. Things cool down and it gets real intimate when Vera's pulling the glass out of Rens' face. I forgot how it ends.
There's pretty much no speech tags or obsessive narration, so the entire writing is almost just dialogue which is pretty cool and might I say even say a superior writing style compared to the usual? Maybe.
Death & Reborn (Autism_Denial_Disorder)
This is a series of fanfics. It starts with Maya somehow hurting Coco, so the reader's suspension of disbelief is already taken out back and shot in the head. It's translated with AI, so Coco gets misgendered in the first or second chapter. I barely started reading this before I quit, so I've got nothing to say about anything other than if an Ongezellig story starts with Maya physically hurting anyone with her bare hands, it has already failed.
Writing About Maya Schoppenboer (Kolibria1994)
I enjoyed some of the short stories in this series, not that I could tell you anything about them, other than the one where Maya trips and falls down the stairs and breaks her skull, landing her at the hospital with her family being sad, or the one where she decides to jump off the roof of the school and kill herself, or the one with the flowers despite the implied lesbianism with Zoey, or the train one, or the other thousand word short stories.
Lonely Child (3SpringFlowers)
This is a ZLISTENING DEPRESSERALD, A24, jumpscare-free, АРЛЕКИНО, which is better than the whole of the Search for Maya, I don't even have to read of all the Search for Maya to know that Lonely Child is better. Anyway, it's about Maya's reaction to Coco getting killed by tree falling on top of her due to a lightning strike (sound familiar?), and Mymy running away to somewhere unknown. Read it NOW!
Lilies (pnegpng)
It's a suicide note written by Coco after Maya killed herself. She couldn't bear the loss of another family member. There are similar fanfics to this one since this one was inspired by them.
We Have A Place For Her (Sabeltann)
This one's about Maya living on her own and being dirt poor. She lives alone in the house from the pilot because her parents moved to an apartment. Maya does art commissions for money, I think, and has a YouYube channel. I remember liking this one.
